ASSIGNMENTS AND FEEDBACK

Assignment Coordinator

The litigation services department, trusts & estates department, family law department and the practice groups that comprise business services each have a system to manage the assigning of work within the department or practice group. The assignment partner or coordinator considers the professional development of each associate within the department or practice group in distributing work so that associates have the opportunity (1) to work on a variety of matters and with different teams and (2) amass experience consistent with their years of practice.

Assignment Coach

The Associate Professional Development Committee serves as the liaison for Schnader’s Assignment Coaching Program. This program provides our new associates with independent review and feedback on work product they produce in their initial months at the firm. The objectives of the program are to assist new associates as they transition into large firm practice and to model lawyering and interpersonal skills requisite to assignment success.

Observation Opportunities

Schnader offers new lawyers the opportunity to observe experienced lawyers practicing law in a variety of settings including closings, negotiations, mediations, hearings, depositions and witness interviews.

Feedback

Partners are expected to meet with associates regularly to provide thorough, substantive, and constructive feedback about the work, the work assignments and concrete suggestions for any improvement.

Evaluations

Each fall, associates participate in a comprehensive evaluation process. The process includes written evaluations from the partners with whom the associate has worked and an associate self-evaluation. Each associate meets with a member of the Associate Professional Development Committee and department or practice group chair to discuss the associate’s performance over the past year and to discuss and set goals for the coming year.
