September 29, 2009 – Philadelphia, PA: James J. Eisenhower, chair of the Firm’s Government and Regulatory Affairs practice group, has been elected to the American Law Institute (ALI). Best known as the author of the Restatements of the Law, the ALI is recognized as one of the premier legal organizations in the United States. The elected membership is limited to just 3,000 judges, lawyers, and law teachers who are selected on the basis of professional achievement and demonstrated interest in the improvement of the law.
Founded in 1923, ALI was created to improve the law and the administration of justice in a scholarly and scientific manner. It engages in intensive examination and analysis of legal areas thought to need reform and works to promote agreement on fundamental principles of the common-law system. In addition to the familiar Restatements, the Institute is active in the drafting of model and uniform laws.
Schnader has a long history of involvement with the ALI. Two of its founders, William A. Schnader and Bernard G. Segal, were active in its work, including creation of the Uniform Commercial Code. Mr. Eisenhower joins nine members of the Firm who are ALI members, including former Judges Arlin M. Adams and Timothy K. Lewis, as well as Albert S. Dandridge, III, Carl A. Solano, Nancy Winkelman, James D. Crawford, Harold Cramer, and Margaret S. Woodruff.
Mr. Eisenhower chairs the Firm’s Government and Regulatory Affairs Practice Group, co-chairs the Government Investigations, Corporate Compliance and Criminal Defense Group, and serves on the Firm’s political action committee. His practice emphasis is on government relations, criminal law, investigative services, ethics and election law, and complex civil litigation. His clients have included the housing authorities of several large cities, a number of current and former public officials, and national corporations. Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Eisenhower served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and as trial attorney for the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice. His long, distinguished record of public service also includes serving as the 2004 Democratic candidate for attorney general of Pennsylvania.
Consistently recognized for his professional achievements and his dedication to public service, he has been routinely recognized as a “Pennsylvania Super Lawyer” for general litigation, received the Edward J. McLaughlin award for distinguished service to victims of crime in 2009, and was honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award from Temple University in 2001. He currently serves as chair of the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority (PICA), having been appointed to the board by Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell in 2005, and elected to serve as chair in 2007. PICA oversees the City of Philadelphia's budget, managing more than $600 billion in bonds and delivering more than $240 million in tax revenues to the city’s finances. He also serves on the Board of Advisors for the International Institute for Strategic Threat Analysis and Response (ISTAR) at the University of Pennsylvania.
