Nature of Practice

Schnader's Washington, D.C. attorneys have extensive experience in all phases of complex trial and appellate litigation before federal and state administrative agencies and courts, and as arbitrators and mediators. Our attorneys have served in such capacities as a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, a member of a federal commission, a municipal planning commissioner, an adjunct professor for Georgetown University, and in positions in the U.S. Department of Justice. Our attorneys also are involved in many community and civic organizations, such as the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the Maryland Attorney General's Environmental Advisory Council, the U.S.-Russia Business Council, and the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts. 

Established in 1974, Schnader's D.C. office is located in the heart of Washington's East End in close proximity to the White House, Capitol Hill, and several federal regulatory agencies. The D.C. office provides excellent service to our local, regional, national and international clients while giving them access to DC and the resources of our national Firm. Description of Practice Areas

Litigation

Schnader's preeminent nationwide reputation for excellence in litigation is exemplified by our attorneys in the Washington, D.C. office. In addition to practice in the courts of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, Schnader's D.C. attorneys have tried cases and argued appeals in state and federal courts throughout the country.

Appellate

Our D.C. attorneys have a wide range of experience in appellate matters and have appeared before U.S. Courts of Appeal throughout the country, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court and various state appellate courts on a variety of matters. Schnader's D.C. office includes a former judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Environmental

Our D.C. attorneys advise clients on federal, state and local environmental and land use statutes and regulations. Our attorneys are knowledgeable in the environmental regulations of agencies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Federal Highway Administration and the Council on Environmental Quality, as well as state regulatory agencies. Clients also are able to tap into environmental transactional experience appropriate for the sale, acquisition, financing and operations of corporate, municipal and other entities. Clients include commercial developers, land owners, municipal entities, public interest organizations and environmental, citizen and community groups.

Land Use/Zoning

Our D.C. attorneys specialize in representing municipal entities and private landowners and developers in litigation over municipal land use and zoning decisions. Our attorneys have successfully defended municipal decision makers in cases challenging legislative and administrative decisions, and have successfully represented the interests of private landowners in connection with land use decisions affecting their properties. Our attorneys have experience on municipal planning commissions, local legislative bodies, and participate actively with national land use and planning organizations including the American Planning Association, the Urban Land Institute and the Congress for the New Urbanism.

Intellectual Property

Our D.C. attorneys have an active intellectual property practice with significant experience in advising on and litigating complex intellectual property issues, including trademark and copyright matters. Clients include financial institutions, an international insurance company, commercial entities and nonprofit organizations.

Labor and Employment

Our D.C. attorneys are experienced advisors and litigators in all aspects of labor and employment law. The office routinely handles complex discrimination and other employment related charges and court cases involving disability, race, age, gender and other forms of discrimination, wage and hour claims, employment eligibility issues, wrongful termination cases, whistleblower protection matters and independent investigations of employee misconduct. Our attorneys also have a strong background in trade secret misappropriation and unfair competition disputes. In addition to advising clients on personnel matters, including discipline and discharge cases, our labor and employment attorneys draft and review employment policies covering the full spectrum of personnel issues. Our attorneys are frequently called upon by our clients to represent them in employment contract negotiations and contract arbitrations and litigation. Clients include large and medium sized for-profit companies and numerous charitable and nonprofit organizations.

Aviation

Our D.C. attorneys regularly litigate matters involving aircraft accidents, aircraft purchases/leases and commercial actions related to aircraft engines and components such as avionics. Our attorneys handle matters before regulatory agencies, such as the Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Transportation. Clients include domestic and international airlines, manufacturers of military, commercial, and general aviation aircraft, helicopters, engines and components, airport authorities, fixed-based operators, maintenance and repair organizations, aircraft owners, operators, financiers, lessees, lessors, and aviation insurers.

Construction

Our Washington D.C. office's construction law practice focuses on representing developers, general contractors, construction managers and significant subcontractors in nearly all aspects of construction contract analysis and litigation for both public and private projects. In addition to construction litigation involving contract disputes, delays, acceleration, cost overruns and changes, our attorneys have extensive experience in federal, state and local public bidding disputes and defense of clients in personal injury, property damage and product liability claims. The D.C. office also represents contractors in labor and prevailing wage disputes with unions and governmental agencies.

Commercial Leasing

Our commercial leasing litigation practice includes contract negotiations and drafting, workouts, alternative dispute resolution, and litigation.

Insurance

Our D.C. attorneys advise and counsel insurers in analyzing difficult coverage issues and negotiating the resolution of claims. Our attorneys handle insurance coverage disputes involving all types of insurance, including policies that provide general liability, environmental, aviation, excess and umbrella coverage. Our attorneys also represent carriers in bad faith and subrogation recovery efforts.

Product Liability

Our D.C. attorneys have significant capability in litigation involving aircraft and aerospace related products, industrial machines, and asbestos products and other toxic substances. The Schnader D.C. practice encompasses all aspects of product design, manufacturing, distribution, warning and warranty issues.

Nonprofit

Our D.C. attorneys have substantial experience in the multitude of legal challenges that confront nonprofit organizations. Our attorneys are familiar with the independent sector and experienced in matters such as corporate governance, employment matters, contracts and tax-exempt issues for nonprofit organizations. Our attorneys also have conducted internal investigations and audits for nonprofit organizations. Schnader's D.C. office regularly hosts informational sessions for charitable and nonprofit organizations on legal issues that uniquely affect the nonprofit sector.

Mediation/Arbitration

Our D.C. attorneys have represented numerous clients in a variety of mediations and arbitrations and also have served as mediators and arbitrators. Our attorneys are active in organizations that provide mediation and arbitration services, such as the CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution in New York and the American Arbitration Association.
