On July 26th, the Hon. Timothy K. Lewis participated in a four hour discussion at Duquesne University along with a small gathering of business, government and education leaders to address strengthening the checks and balances of our democratic system. The event, called by former Congressman Dick Gephardt and former Governor Tom Corbett, was sponsored by “Keep Our Republic”, a civic education non-partisan non-profit focused on preventing an array of extraordinary threats to American democracy. The gathering explored potential uncertainties around the anticipated certification and legal contests to the November 2024 election, and avenues to improve democratic guardrails and educate the broader Pennsylvania public. Several scenarios during both the Election Day and Certification periods were discussed in an effort to draw from collective expertise. The Conveners included Mary McCord, former Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security and current Executive Director of the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection at Georgetown University; Joseph Sabino Mistick, professor of law at Duquesne University; and Jonathan Winer, former counsel to U.S. Senator John Kerry and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State.
