Hon. Timothy K. Lewis Weighs in on Supreme Court Vacancy

On January 10, 2017 by Schnader in News

The Hon. Timothy K. Lewis discussed the Supreme Court vacancy on Voice of America News, International Edition on January 8, 2017.

Judge Lewis frequently called for the Senate to take up Judge Merrick Garland’s nomination throughout 2016, speaking at a public hearing with Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and, along with Vice President Biden, giving the president’s weekly address to the nation on this topic.

He expressed dismay at the novel idea that a president loses his powers to make nominations in an election year.

“We diminish the Court when we …make it into a political football as opposed to the honored institution that it must always be,” he said.

Judge Lewis was nominated by George H.W. Bush to serve on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and was unanimously confirmed by a Democratic Senate in 1992.
