Schnader Attorney Chosen to Head the Legal Department at the Maryland Department of the Environment

On May 21, 2008 by Schnader in Litigation

May 21, 2008 – Washington, DC: Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP is proud to announce that Steven R. Johnson, who has been a partner in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office for more than six years, has been appointed by Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler to serve as the General Counsel of the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).

“We are extremely proud of Steve,” said John Britton, Managing Partner of Schnader’s Washington, D.C. office and member of the Rockville (Maryland) City Council. “While we will miss him as a colleague and as a friend, this is a wonderful professional opportunity for him, and the Attorney General could not have made a more solid choice. Steve and I have developed a wonderful working relationship over many years, working closely together on environmental and land use issues, both at Schnader and as colleagues on the City of Rockville Planning Commission. As he moves on to this new venture in his career I offer my support and assistance, and know that this is not the end of the story, but just the next chapter.”

Britton went on to note that Mr. Johnson’s experience, knowledge and background in environmental law, combined with his passion for protecting and responsibly managing the state’s precious environmental resources, make him the perfect candidate for this position.

In his new role, Mr. Johnson will serve as the chief legal advisor to the Secretary of the Environment, Shari T. Wilson, and will be responsible for managing twenty-one assistant attorneys general charged with enforcing the environmental laws and regulations across the state of Maryland. The mission of the MDE is to protect and restore the quality of Maryland’s air, water, and land resources, while fostering smart growth, economic development, healthy and safe communities, and quality environmental education for the benefit of the environment, public health, and future generations.

At Schnader, Mr. Johnson represented clients in environmental, land use and administrative matters. He advised clients on compliance with federal, state and local environmental and land use regulatory programs. He also handled administrative proceedings and litigation under federal programs such as the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the National Historic Preservation Act and CERCLA, as well as state regulatory programs governing brownfields, underground storage tanks, surface water management, transportation management, environmental assessments and zoning.

He is also active in the community, serving as a commissioner – and recently as Chair – of the City of Rockville Planning Commission (Maryland). He also serves as Chair for the Stonestreet Redevelopment Implementation Task Force, which is examining strategies for the redevelopment of an industrial corridor in Rockville, Maryland into a revitalized cultural, arts and entertainment district. In October 2007, he was appointed to serve as a member of the Attorney General’s Environmental Advisory Council, which was created by Maryland’s Attorney General to assist in identifying priority environmental issues and to help guide his Office’s environmental policy and enforcement initiatives.
