On August 22, 2008 by Schnader in News

The USO of Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey will honor “The Service Members of the Year” from each of the five branches of the military at this special event.

August 22, 2008 – Philadelphia, PA: Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP is a proud co-sponsor of this year’s 67th Anniversary Gala supporting the USO of Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey (“Liberty USO”), which will be held October 3, 2008 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The theme of this year’s event – which will be held in partnership with the 7th Annual South Jersey Veterans Dinner Dance – will be, “Land of the Free…Because of the Brave,” and will reflect the USO’s commitment and dedication to providing family support and other vital programs for our men and women in uniform who have served and continue to serve in the United States military.

J. Denny Shupe, who serves as chair of Schnader’s Litigation Department, is a co-chair of the event, which will honor a heroic local “Service Member of the Year” from each of the five braches of the Armed Forces. Additionally, the Honorable Gordon England, Deputy Secretary of Defense, will receive the distinguished Liberty Award, Giant Food Stores, LLC will receive the Chairman’s Award, and former Philadelphia Eagle Vince Papale, who served as the inspiration for the movie Invincible, will receive the New Jersey Commendation Award. Special guests will include New Jersey native, comedian and former Saturday Night Live actor Joe Piscopo, and current Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jon Runyan. The evening’s program will be hosted by 6ABC meteorologist Karen Rogers, and feature an incredible silent auction and dancing to the Jack Faulkner Orchestra.

The Liberty USO is a congressionally chartered, nonprofit organization – not a government agency – and is supported solely through voluntary contributions. The organization receives no government funding. The Anniversary Gala is the major fundraising event for the Liberty USO, and provides funding and support for the programs the organizations provides to service personnel throughout the entire year, including marriage enrichment programs, survivor networking, summer camp programs for children of service personnel, phone cards, Helping Hand (a program that provides assistance with families having short-term difficulty paying utility bills due to a family member’s deployment), Liberty Cares Food Vouchers (a program that provides grocery vouchers to assist families trying to make ends meet due to reduced circumstances while the reservist or Guardsman is activated), Program Einstein (a program that provides vouchers and gift certificates for the purchase of back-to-school supplies for the children of service members), and United Through Reading (a program that allows deployed military personnel to choose book from the USO library, videotape themselves reading the book, and then have the book and the videotape sent to the deployed parent’s child), as well as the operation of numerous service centers and deployment support of many tens of thousands of military personnel departing to and returning from Iraq, Afghanistan and other worldwide deployment locations. Last year alone, more than $500,000 of goods and services – a historic record for Liberty USO – were provided to aid and support military personnel and their families throughout Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. The need for services and support is expected to remain at record levels for the upcoming year, as National Guard troops from Pennsylvania and New Jersey are expected to be deployed in 2008. Schnader is proud to support the mission of the Liberty USO, and proud to be a co-sponsor of the 67th Anniversary Gala; tickets and more information is available by visiting
