Timothy Lewis and NAACP President Benjamin Jealous Discuss Civil Rights Movement

On March 13, 2013 by Schnader in News

On March 13, 2013, students from Imani Christian Academy and several Pittsburgh-area high schools took part in a pre-show forum with Timothy K. Lewis, and his dear friend NAACP President Benjamin Jealous, discussing the history of the civil rights movement focusing on the events/milestones that took place during the lifetime of Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993).

The students then attended the Pittsburgh Public Theater at the O’Reilly Theater’s matinee performance of Thurgood, directed by Ted Pappas and starring Montae Russell. Other high schools participating include Gateway, McKeesport, Perry Traditional, Pittsburgh Obama, and Winchester Thurston.

The New Pittsburgh Courier covered the event with an article entitled “NAACP presidents call for youth involvement” and quoted Judge Lewis who gave the students a history of the struggle to desegregate schools.
