Jeanne Barnum Moderated a Panel on Women in ConstructionOn December 7, 2016 by Schnader
Construction Industry Practice Group co-chair Jeanne Barnum moderated the panel “Breaking Ground for Women in Construction – the Biggest Pool of Qualified Workers May be Women” at the Construction Super Conference in Las Vegas on December 7th at 1:45 p.m.
Though the pool of available manpower in construction jobs is declining, the share of women in construction remains low. Sexual hostility, lack of mentors, and stereotyped assumptions about women’s capabilities have created roadblocks for their entry into the construction field. Attendees learned how to reverse this trend and fill the growing need for manpower with womanpower. Panelists discussed how hiring, training and promoting women can improve a company’s bottom line. They also learned the special skill sets women bring to the table, the profitability factor of women on boards and in the corner office and the financial advantages of partnering with women-owned/controlled businesses. Panelists included:
- Debbie Mello, past president of the National Association of Women in Construction-Las Vegas and Sales Coordinator, Desert Companies USLBM
- Emily Martin, General Counsel and Vice President for Workplace Justice, National Women’s Law Center
- Jana Forsythe, President and CEO, F.E.I. Construction
- Barbara Wagner, Sr. Vice President, Clark Construction Group – California LP
