A conference report from Laurel – “It was an honor to speak last week at SCCE’s annual Higher Education Compliance Conference, along with co-presenters from the University of Pittsburgh. Our session was predominantly attended by higher education compliance professionals from both athletic and general compliance departments and university legal counsel. A particular highlight was a lively discussion of how to identify and when to elevate potential misconduct for an investigation or higher-level review.”
Laurel Gift, chair of the Criminal Defense and Internal Investigations practice group, spoke at the Higher Education Compliance Conference of the Society of Corporate Compliance & Ethics, on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 in Orlando, FL. Gift presented a seminar about “Teamwork: The Relationship Between Compliance Officers, In-House Counsel, and Outside Counsel During Internal Investigations.”
This presentation covered: Understanding and navigating the internal relationship between compliance officers and in-house counsel; Understanding the investigation process, identifying the client and scope, gathering evidence, role of compliance and audit department, and preventing common pitfalls; and Navigating the investigation’s aftermath – reporting findings, contemplating disclosure of the report, and the organizational response to recommendations and outcomes.
Gift concentrates her practice in the area of internal investigations for institutions of high education, municipalities, and private businesses and representing corporate and individual clients in a variety of criminal matters.
