Professional Practice for Interior DesignersOn November 28, 2007 by Schnader
Each semester, Cynthia Fischer is a guest speaker for the “Professional Practice” course taught by Mary Burke, AIA (American Institute of Architects) IIDA (International Interior Design Association), at the Design Studio of Pratt Institute’s main campus in Brooklyn, New York. The course is offered to graduate students in interior design. Ms. Fischer speaks about the necessity of setting up as a professional limited liability company (PLLC), which is a requirement in New York that is often violated through ignorance of the law. Additional course topics included certification by the New York State Education Department; contract issues such as payment, limitation of damages, termination, protection and retention of copyright; client relations; and handling conflicts of interest. Ms. Fischer specializes in representing design professionals including architects and engineers, foreign and domestic, and is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
