James R. Meyer

    Mr. Meyer is a member of the Firm's Intellectual Property Group. He represents a wide range of clients in the pharmaceutical, computer, fashion, and financial services industries. Mr. Meyer has extensive experience in the selection, acquisition, maintenance, and defense of trademarks, service marks, trade names, trade dress, Internet domain names, and copyrights in the U.S. and worldwide. This includes all business and licensing transactions related to these properties. He also focuses on the use and protection of intellectual property rights on the Internet. Mr. Meyer is the Firm's representative to the International Trademark Association and is a former officer of the Association, having been Trademark Counsel of a major multinational pharmaceutical company.

    AREAS OF EXPERIENCE

    Representative matters include:
    • Protected IP rights for a world renowned concert artist in online instructional videos.
    • Acquired IP rights for two well-known universities by registering service marks in the U.S. and internationally.
    • Policed medical publisher's copyrighted works from being unlawfully downloaded from Internet file sharing sites.
    • Successfully negotiated the settlement of a claim that a U.K. client's use in the U.S. of its international trademark infringed the rights of a U.S. trademark owner.
    • Guarded a well known food franchisor's mark against an infringing use from one of its competitors.
    • Managed international trademark portfolios on behalf of pharmaceutical and automotive clients. Specifically, registered trademarks in China previously blocked by a trademark "pirate."
    • Protected the house mark for a pharmaceutical client and prevented registration of similar marks for pharmaceutical preparations.

    Additional Background
    Before joining Schnader, Mr. Meyer was a shareholder in a Philadelphia intellectual property law firm. In addition to his client responsibilities, he supervised the maintenance and renewal of all trademark registrations for the firm's clients. Earlier in his career, he was trademark counsel for a multinational pharmaceutical company, responsible for the company's worldwide portfolio of more than 2,000 trademarks and 20,000 trademark registrations.
