Business leaders may not have noticed because it was Election Day, but on November 3, 2020, Governor Wolf signed Senate Bill 976 into law. The establishment of “commerce courts” by SB 976 may prove to be the most impactful Pennsylvania business legislation enacted in 2020.

Passed with bipartisan support, SB 976 forms the framework for creating commerce courts across the Commonwealth. As proven in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, these are “problem solving courts” for businesses. In the long-run, the new law will enable the state’s judicial system to implement specialized procedures to resolve commercial disputes more efficiently.
